What is Blog Commenting and How it Helps in Ranking
Several blogs allow the readers to leave a comment on their blog posts. The blog comment requires you to fill in some mandatory details such as your name, email address, and the URL to your blog before submitting a comment. What is blog commenting and how it helps in the ranking are two questions that are very commonly asked by people new in the field. Although due to the misuse of blog commenting over the years many people do not give much value to it, I, however, believe it still has a significant impact with regards to SEO when used strategically.
What is Blog Commenting?
The most specific and straightforward definition for blog commenting is “the comments readers and other bloggers leave at the end of articles/content that you have published on your blog.” The blog comments can be anything; from a question by a reader to an appreciation of your writing skills and like many SEO strategies it has been widely misused for link building and website ranking.
Not only does blog commenting make the blog more interactive and lively, but it also attracts traffic, giving a boost to the backlink graph.
How Blog Comments Help in Ranking a Website?
Since you are allowed to add your website link with the blog comment, this builds backlinks. If luckily it is a do-follow backlink then you have just hit the jackpot and you will attract a lot of traffic from that link. Even with a no-follow backlink, natural links will build up over the period of time.
Blog commenting results in direct traffic if you select the right blogs; high profile ones with high domain and page authority in the relevant niche. People are more likely to check out your blog if they find your comment interesting and intelligent.
Blog commenting helps build and strengthen your relationship with fellow bloggers and readers. Consistency is the key, be consistent with the comments, and this might even land you with business opportunities with fellow bloggers or users reading your comment. A client once approached me for content writing after he had read my comment on a blog in his field of interest.
Creates Brand Recognition:
When you post a blog comment, your name, website link, and the picture becomes visible for many people who might not have heard of it before. Some might click and be redirected to your website only to find services of their interest being offered. The more often you comment on blogs, the more visible you become and this, in turn, creates your brand recognition.
When you post a relevant, knowledgeable, and interactive comment, it adds credibility that you are well versed in that specific niche. Since your blog comments are so spot on your blog must be even better, this is the impression you will create, a great marketing strategy for your brand name.
How to do Blog Commenting for Traffic?
Here are my tips on blog commenting, I have learned these over the years through trial and error, and hopefully these will help you rank, so let’s go through these pro’s and con’s for blog commenting:
Target High-Quality Websites:
You cannot expect a website with low page and domain authority to land you organic traffic or quality links. Always focus on high-quality websites (preferably website having a more than 60 domain authority); do your research and analyze the websites authority and other metrics before commenting. You can use a tool such as Open Site Explorer, SEMRUSH or AHREFS for website analysis.
Focus on Articles Relevant to Your Niche:
Niche relevance is extremely important when choosing an article for a blog comment. Relevance gives you the leverage of having command on critically analyzing the content and state your opinion on a specific topic which in turn will add value to the comment.
Read the Post Before Commenting:
Never “assume” the content of the blog post by merely reading the first and last few lines, thoroughly go through the article only then will you be able to write a valuable blog comment worthy of acceptance.
Keep it Short:
Always keep the blog comment short, ideally not more than 100-150 words depending on the niche. Remember, it is a comment, not a blog post, so don’t get carried away.
The Comment Should be Relevant to the Article:
Repeat this three times to have it marked in your memory, a comment not related to the actual piece of writing is entirely useless for both parties no matter how informative, interactive and lengthy the comment is.
Read Comments Written by Others:
You can learn a lot by analyzing other peoples’ comments, especially if you are a newbie. By analyzing their comments, you can learn to use humor while commenting, the tone they use, and how other bloggers are presenting themselves online.
Tips for Adding Value to your Blog Comment:
- Opening: Do not start a comment with a “hi” or “hello” while moving on with the comment. The blogger should be addressed with his name in the beginning, along with the usual “hello,” “hi.”
- Compliment the author on his piece of writing/ content. This part does not have to be a long 100 words paragraph. It can be a single sentence. Quote, a phrase from his content in order to add credibility that you have read the post.
- Acknowledge the valuable information you gained from the content; at this point, you can state your valuable opinion or criticism very politely. Avoid personal attacks.
Things to Avoid While Blog Commenting:
Certain aspects, if not taken care of, can result in your blog comment to be rejected by the owner of the website. Following should be avoided:
- Do not add an extra link in the comment.
- Do not use your target keyword as a user name while posting a comment. This will get your comment rejected. Also, don’t use fancy names such as “the fitness fairy” instead of an actual name.
- Avoid Automated Comments, do not go down the spammy blog commenting road and avoid spun comments.
Blog commenting and guest blogging are two different processes. You can learn how to guest post and use both these strategies to attain traffic and rank your website.
